The Abaco Islands are a 120-mile-long chain of tropical, extremely tourist friendly islands in the northern Bahamas. Here in the midst of paradise you will discover championship golf courses galore, historical and charming colonial towns, some of the best and affordable hotels in the world, and a seemingly endless string of unique and delicious restaurants and bars. These beautiful limestone islands are guarded by the third largest reef in the world. These islands are believed to have been inhabited long before European settlement.
The group of people who lived there right before the Europeans were the Lucayans. They inhabited the islands until 1520 by which time Spain had taken all of them as slaves. It remained uninhabited until the European settlement. The first “European” settlers were former residents of America who remained loyal to the British crown during the American Revolution. In groups, they fled the scene together when the British were defeated. They remained a colony of Britain until 1971 when its government decided to finally become independent.
Today there are around 17 to 18,000 inhabitants of the islands. It has become a very popular tourist destination. In fact, several of the minor islands, called cays, are dedicated almost exclusively to tourism and vacationers. In addition, throughout the Abaco islands there are six national parks: Pelican Cays Land & Sea Park, Abaco National Park, Black Sound Cay National Reserve, Walker’s Cay National Park, Tilloo Cay National Reserve, and Fowl Cays National Reserve. The islands also play host to an increasingly popular sporting event called The Great Abaco Family Fitness Weekend. This annual event which brings spectators and participants from all over the year, includes all manner of swimming and racing events. There are also events in most of these categories for children.
For transportation to and from the islands there is Marsh Harbour Airport. For travel to the surrounding islands, there are a multitude of ferry systems.
